Thread: [VideoTutorial] How to play games that require 5.55+ firmware

Lots of posts in the help section for people wanting to know how to play the newer games. We got tutorials on how to upgrade to GEN B and how to decrypt games using yoshihiro decrypter. This tutorial brings both of these together so that you have one point of call on how to get your PSP to play newer games that require 5.55+. Also, this tutorial has video content so hopefully everything is self explanatory.

This video tutorial shows you how to play games that require 5.55+ firmware. To do this you need to upgrade to 5.5 GEN B2 and then you need to decrypt the games so that they run on 5.50 GEN B2. This tutorial assumes you are already running some form of custom firmware (except for SE/OE).

Note: The following tests and videos were all performed on a phat


Upgrading to 5.50 GEN B2

THIS WILL ONLY WORK IF YOU HAVE A FULLY HACKABLE MOTHERBOARD. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS ON A 3000 OR 2000 WITH A TA088V3.

XGEN Updater does not work on every firmware. Here are the results of my test on a phat:

3.52 M33-4 Freezes when you press X to Enter at the main screen
3.71 M33-4 Shuts down shortly after "Now load all modules from UPDATER"
3.90 M33-3 Shuts down shortly after "Now load all modules from UPDATER"
4.01 M33-2 Works
5.00 M33-6 Works
5.02 GEN A Works

So if your PSP is currently running any of the older firmware then either :

A. Update to an M33 firmware that works.
B. Update to 5.50 GEN B2 manually following the steps below. Note: I have tested this on 5.00 m33-6 so it should pretty much work for any M33.

Manual Update Instructions
1. Download [Only Registered users can see links . Click Here To Register...]
2. Download [Only Registered users can see links . Click Here To Register...]
3. Extract the contents of both of the files to your pc
4. From the files you extracted, copy the UPDATE folder and 5.50-genB2-update folder to PSP/GAME on your PSP
5. From your PSP main menu navigate to GAME and launch the 5.50 GEN A installer. Follow the prompts.
6. Once this has completed check your system software reads 5.50 GEN A (Full) (System Settings->System Information->System Software)
7. Now from the PSP main menu navigate to GAME and launch PSPGEN 5.50GEN-B2 Updater
8. Once this has completed check your system software reas 5.50 GEN B (Full)
