I have to say, this is the best game I've played in a long time. If you have an Xbox 360 or a PS3 or a gaming PC, then you should pick up this game, but make sure you grab the Game of the Year edition, because it has all of the expansions all under one $60 roof ($50 for PC)
Fun: ****1/2
The story is pretty interesting, and at first you may think it's shallow (the pun was unintentional.) but it is an interesting one.
**SPOILERS BE HERE**
All the Lone Wanderer's Mom and Dad wanted was to purify the waters of the Wasteland to make them drinkable, and hopefully restore some civilized life to the Wasteland. That was the his mother's dying wish, and he and his father felt an obligation to fulfill it.
**SPOILERS BE DONE**
As a side note, V.A.T.S is fun as hell, and adds a little of the strategic element that hardcore Fallout fans wanted.
It is a fun game, and the quests aren't too repetitive. Beware, though, that you should save often. I graded it down 1/2 point because of all the random freezes, glitches, or places where you can get stuck. That takes a little fun out of it.
Replayability: *****
You can easily spend over 100 hours on this game finishing the quests, and even longer searching every nook and cranny in the game. You can start a new game over and do all of the quests a different way, and decide to be evil/good/neutral instead of what you were in your first game.
Add-ons: ****1/2
Some of the add-ons are weak, and some are very linear. Operation Anchorage's rewards are awesome, but the gameplay is very linear and boring if you're not into those type of games. Broken Steel is a must-have, increasing your level cap and giving you extra perks, and allowing you to complete the game even after you've beaten the original game (If you didn't use the FEV in the purifier (JERK if you did D: lol)). I haven't played any others yet, I heard Point Lookout is tough so I want to get my level up, and am getting around to doing The Pitt soon. I might do Mothership Zeta last. All three look at least somewhat promising, though.
Overall: ****1/2
A good buy if you're looking for a nice open-world game. I think this is a great adaptation of an old turn-based isometric game, and Bethesda did a great job of making it a First- and Third-Person real time shooter. While it is probably possible to make it through without glitches, they should have fixed some of those quicker. I haven't encountered many large glitches, but many people have.
Now they need to make a PSP version :P
