Square Enix has revealed exclusively via a special video presentation on the PlayStation.Blog that Final Fantasy XIII will be released on the PS3 in Europe and North America on 9th March 2010. Aside from this long-awaited announcement, which follows on from a lot of frustratingly coy hints that big news was on the way, the video also includes an interview with producer Yoshinori Kitase, in which he reveals that HD was used for the first time in a Final Fantasy game in FF XIII. Director Motomu Toriyama is also featured on the video, talking about how the characters are “the most important element of Final Fantasy”. *He says that the heroine of the game, Lighting, is “the most powerful woman in the entire series”, which is a lot to live up to! Toriyama also introduces “hot-blooded” hero Snow, “vulnerable girl” Vanille and “sensitive” Hope.
Elsewhere in the video, art director Isamu Kamikokuryo gives a tantalising description of the overall look of the game, saying that “the blend of futuristic technology with the wild nature and ecosystem is unlike anything anyone has ever seen before”, while battle Director Yuji Abe talks about the new Paradigm Shift battle system. The video ends with some impressive footage showing the new battle system in action, as well as a chocobo riding off into the distance. Sheer bliss for Final Fantasy fanatics!
“Final Fantasy XIII promises to be a huge event in the 2010 gaming calendar,” said Phil Rogers, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Europe. “This is truly a landmark title, arriving simultaneously for multiple platforms for the first time in the history of the series. We are also immensely proud to be able to bring the game to the European and PAL audience much earlier than was publicly anticipated.”
