    Default PS3 LED MOD Tutorial's

On this page you will find these Tutorial's :

    1. PS3 SIXAXIS LED MOD

    2. PS3 Pulsing Slot Light MOD

    Adding more soon!

    Tutorial 1 : PS3 SIXAXIS LED MOD

NOTE : Im not responsible for anything you do to your controller.

This tutorial will show you how to put an LED under the PS button on the SIXAXIS controller like the one shown below:

[Only Registered users can see links . Click Here To Register...]

This is best done on a clear workspace where you have lots of room. There are about 12 small pieces within the Sixaxis, and it wouldn't be very nice if you lost a few, or even one piece.

    Parts needed:

*3 volts LED - (3mm recommended) Any color
*1/4 watts 47 Ohms Resister "Yellow - Purple - Black"
    *30 gauge wires
    *PS3 controller
    *Tiny Philip screw driver

    Step 1 - Opeing the PS3 controller

[Only Registered users can see links . Click Here To Register...]

First off, lets make sure the PS3 controller is off. Press the home button, then scroll down to turn off controller. Once you done so, take the Tiny philip screw driver and unscrew the 5 screws from the bottom of the PS3 controller. After you unsrewed the screws, lift up the top of the Sixaxis, "Where R1, R2, L1 and L2" is at. And push upwards. There is a clipping at the bottom piece where the Start, Select and PS3 Home button is at.

*That is how it looks like, try not to pull to hard, it can break. Just firmly press upwards away from the Analog area.

Once you got the Sixaxis open; It should look like this :

Becareful and unhook the batter since its not really needed at the moment, and it will get in our way.

After you remove the battery, it will be like this now.

You can remove the 2 battery brace, since they will fall off anyways, lol. And there is a little black cap for the manual power off button at the bottom left corner, make sure you dont lose that. Unscrew the silver screw at the top middle of this image.

Now we are at this stage,

[Only Registered users can see links . Click Here To Register...]

You should be now able to dislocate the controller body from the case. Once you remove the circuit board off that plastic board. You will end up with this.

[Only Registered users can see links . Click Here To Register...]

Carefully peel the plastic sheet, upwards, and unplug it from the board.

Place that somewhere safe and NOT near the solder iron.

Now you should have a clean standalone circuit board.

Okay, now remove the analog stick; They should just pop right off.

You will be soldering where I marked red.

Lets take a closer look at each location, and to see where you will be soldering.

For the positive current, you will be soldering here.

    For the negitive side, you will be soldering here;

Cut 2 pieces of 30 gauge wires, about 2-4 inches each. I suggest 4 inches, since you may have problems, a few times.

You can solder the wires to them now, it is alot easier to; Once you got the wires solder to those points, you can start creating the LED circuit. The resistor must be solder on to the shorter leg of the LED.

    Here is an ASCII art of how it will be;

    { + } --------[LED]-------|------////[47 Ohms]/////-------- { - }

Solder the LED circuit to the wires you solder to the Controller board.

Ok, you are done with the somewhat hard part. Before you can put it back together, you must make some changes to the Controller parts.

You should see a small piece of rubber, with 3 connections. Start, Select and PS3 Home.

[Only Registered users can see links . Click Here To Register...]

You will need to cut the white piece, since it will go over the LED. But the reason we are cuttin is, because it will press against the LED and wont allow it to function correctly. "Simply, it wont piece back together, because of the LED is in the way"

You have to cut about 3/4 of its size,

Also, there is a piece on the flat plastic board that the circuit sits on, that have to be modify aswell. Since the LED legs have to go through it. Just cut, or burn with the solder iron, a path for the LED legs.

Now you can place everything back together, once you have placed the LED in its new home. It can take some time to put it back together. Took me about an hour to put it back correctly.

If you have any extra wires, just place them under the D-Pad. (left and right)

Snap everything back and your all set, turn it on and have fun!

Tutorial 2 : PS3 Pulsing Slot Light MOD

This guide will teach you how to make a pulsing slot light for the PS3 drive just like the Nintendo Wii has.

NOTE: It will also void your warranty so use at your own risk! And im not resposible for anything you do to your PS3.

    Materials Needed:
    *Philips head screw driver
    *Soldering iron /w solder
    *SMD LED (Your color choice).
*PIC 12f629 (big or small version, bigger is easier in this case)
    *PIC programmer

    *470t86; resistor
*Wire (30 AWG Kynar wire recommended)
    *Momentary push switch
    *Proto Board(optional)
    * PS3

To get started download the Pulse Hex

Now use ICProg to program the PIC 12f629 with the PulseHEX you just downloaded from above.

After programming the chip, solder up the chip as shown below. Note: I have used the smaller version IN/S but it makes no difference.

You want wires coming from Pin 1,2,5& 8 for these are the pins we will be using. At this point i decided to wire up the circuit to a proto board this is the schematic:

Now wire as show in the schematic and you should have something like this:

I have a little plug where i can just unclip the LEDs when I need to remove the Drive

Once that is all wired up take apart the PS3 all you need to do is take its top off.

Now remove the BD drive there is a ribbon cable underneath it and a power cable at the side so just take not of them.
That power cable at the side I just mentioned is where we will be getting out power from its 12Volts so thats why we need the 470ohm resistor

Here is what I am talking about:

Now lets focus on the BD drive at the front at the moment there should be some felt, peel this off and put it somewhere in case we need it again.

Looking at the front case there is a hole at the right and left of the DVD drive (I used this to run the wiring through it helps hold it in place )
Now with that LED at that end i just put a little foam tape next to it to keep it in place and protection.

    One completed and other not:

Both done; Note that the wiring can be hidden behind the front metal shielding if you opt to do this you will have to take apart the shielding from the BD drive a little bit
Both done connected the circuit board:

Now this is probably a good time to plug back all the ribbon and power cables the BD drive and then plug the circuit board into its 12V power points. and turn the PS3 on.
This is what you should get :

It should pulse at the fastest speed if this is your first time using it with that PIC but just press the push button to activate a slower sequence keep pressing the button till your happy with a speed.

Here is a picture of where the circuit board hides :

When finished correctly should look like this :

hi guys ive recently performed the led mod on my dualshock 3
controller, everything went succesfully until i realised that
the controller leds stay on all the time, that meaning the battery
runs out alot of the time, so most times i have to play with the
ds3 conntected to the ps3 because the battery is drained out during
the ps3 being turned off and the actual controller leds staying lit.
Can someone please advice me of what to do? what have i done wrong?
thanks for any help offered guys.
